From the sideline: This team is really good
I went to the Royal-Zillah football game Friday night expecting a contest like the 21-14 affair Royal took from 2A Ellensburg the previous week.
Not even close. The Knights scored on their first two offensive plays with passing bombs and ran away, 40-7.
This team may just the equal of last year's state champs. It found its running game, with sophomore Alonso Hernandez emerging as the lead horse.
Hernandez hits the holes quickly, is shifty and bulls through tacklers. He is a sturdy 5-10, 185 and, at the sideline, he turns upfield instead of out of bounds.
On the quarterback front, it was fun listening to Sunnyside Daily reporters on the sideline. They were beside themselves in their appraisal of Kaden Jenks.
“On a dime,” was most used. Even on a pass that flew across the field and down about 20 yards.
During the first quarter of the Ellensburg game, The Bulldogs' athletic director texted, “This kid is the real deal,” to friend.
He's better than that. He lauds the other players and never talks about himself. On defense he's just another Fighting Knight, lighting up opposing ball carriers.
Also impressive are the team's receivers. Jenks throws the ball so fast and so hard you'd think they'd miss. Led by Corbin Christensen, they are always ready.
As impressive as all of the above have been in two highly touted games, most impressive may be Ramses Gonzalez, Juan Garcia, Tyler Dorsing, Raynor Beierle and the rest of the offensive lineman.
These boys have not allowed a sack, and Jenks has been forced to move from his spot only a couple of times.
This really is a good good football team. You need to come out and watch at least once. You won't be disappointed.
