Commemorate Constitution Week

| September 15, 2016 1:45 PM

Did you know that Congress passed a law establishing Sept. 17 as Constitution Day, and the week beginning Sept. 17 as Constitution Week? We have holidays celebrating New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, MLK Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, etcetera. But, we do not honor or commemorate our Supreme Law of the land – the U.S. Constitution.

Have you every wondered what our country would be like if we lived under a different set of laws, where freedoms were limited or controlled by government? Where tyranny or anarchy rules? Have you asked yourself – what rights do I enjoy? Have we fostered a love for America and for the freedoms and liberty that we have? Do we remember the sacrifices, the shedding of blood, and the pain and suffering that our founding fathers and mothers went through to give us this wonderful document?

Please do something this coming Constitution Week (Sept. 17-23) to commemorate our Constitution. Activities that you can participate in include

• flying the flag,

• writing a letter of support to the editor of your local newspaper,

• writing to your congressman or woman,

• holding a family night activity and discuss this document,

• read the Constitution,

• read the Federalist Papers,

• encourage your religious leader to give a sermon on The Founding and Framing of America.

And, above all, encourage others to do the same.

Remember the words of William Pitt, former Prime Minister of Great Britain: “The American Constitution will be the wonder and the admiration of all future generations, and the model of all future constitutions.” (quoted in Harry Atwood, Our Republic (Merrimac, Mass: Destiny Publishers, 1974), p. 62).

Let’s do something this year to commemorate this great document, and the freedoms that we enjoy.
