ROYAL CITY – The Royal High School soccer team opened the new season last week with a 6-0 triumph over Goldendale.

“We are excited to get a win in our first match of the season, and while Goldendale had a pair of own goals that helped us get going. We scored a few screamers in the second half and showed that we want to play in a style that can be built on for the long term,” coach Jens Jensen said.

It took the Knights a half to get going. The first score was an own goal by the Timberwolves in the 18th minute.

The score remained 1-0 through halftime, then Royal exploded. Six minutes and 20 seconds into the second half, Jennifer Ledezma passed to Amy Sandoval for a goal.

There was another Goldendale own goal less than five minutes later for a 3-0 difference.

From 60:56 to 62:34, or in less than two minutes, the Knights finished off the Timberwolves with three more goals.

Noelia Juarez scored the first two, one on an assist from Ledezma. McKenzie Garcia scored the final goal.

Royal dominated all over the field. The Knights had 10 shots on goal to two for Goldendale. Royal had 10 corner kicks, Goldendale none.

Juarez made both of her shots. Garcia made one of three.

The Royal girls will play at Wahluke today.
