Prep roundup: Warden overcomes the elements, strict officiating to beat Highland 3-0

WARDEN — A downpour at the start the game didn’t affect Warden’s scoring in its final non-league contest against Highland.

“That was a challenge, but both teams had to play through it,” head coach Hannah Mohs said.

Aaliyah Escamilla finished a pass from Aubree Skone and Bailey Whitney scored off a direct kick. Highland later conceded an own goal.

Warden finishes its regular season at Royal on Oct. 25. The Cougars are locked into the South Central Athletic Conference East’s No. 2 seed and will play their first district tournament game next Saturday, 11 a.m., at home.

The likely opponent is Cle Elum-Roslyn.

Wenatchee 6, Moses Lake 2

WENATCHEE — Moses Lake couldn’t contain Wenatchee’s firepower and lost 6-2.

The Panthers led 3-0 after the first 15 minutes and 5-2 at halftime. Emily Mendoza and Denali Knowles scored within two minutes of each other, however, the Panthers answered with three straight goals.

Ephrata 3, Prosser 2 (SO)

EPHRATA — Ephrata rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to beat Prosser 3-2 in a shootout.

The win gave Ephrata a share of the Central Washington Athletic Conference league championship.

“It’s awesome to be able to finish as strong as we did,” head coach Hillary Coomes said.

Mya Spencer scored on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute and Bekah Schmuck forced overtime with a goal in the 77th minute.

“It was definitely intense,” Coomes said. “It was a nail biter.”

Othello 3, Toppenish 0

TOPPENISH — Just a year removed from missing the postseason entirely, Othello is co-league champion in the CWAC.

Othello beat Toppenish 3-0 to stay tied for first place.

Nikki Velazquez had two assists and a goal. Tori Cantu and Kaylee Martinez also scored.

Wapato 3, Quincy 0

QUINCY — Quincy couldn’t rally from a 1-0 halftime deficit and lost to Wapato on senior night 3-0.

Alicie Villegas and Payton Richardson scored for the Wolves.

Volleyball

River View 3, Warden 0

KENNEWICK — Warden was swept on the road by River View 25-13, 25-10, 25-18.

Warden finishes its regular season at home against Kiona-Benton on Oct. 25.

Ephrata 3, Grandview 0

EPHRATA — Ephrata swept Grandview and clinched a district playoff berth on Thursday.

Prosser 3, Othello 0

PROSSER — Othello dropped to second in the CWAC after a three-set loss at Prosser.

East Valley 3, Quincy 0

QUINCY — Quincy was eliminated from postseason contention after a three-set loss to East Valley 25-23, 25-12, 25-16.

Morgan Kleyn and Natalie Thomsen had eight kills each.

Soap Lake 3, Oroville 0

SOAP LAKE — Soap Lake swept Oroville 25-21, 25-15, 25-6.

Ellensburg handles East Valley, Othello at home meet

ELLENSBURG — Ellensburg boys and girls cross country dominated its home meet with East Valley and Othello at Rotary Park.

Othello’s David Maldonado finished 12th in 18 minutes, 34 seconds and Grayce Goddard took 16th in 23 minutes, 1 second.
