Othello Curb Appeal awards go to NAPA and hospital
OTHELLO – The Othello Beautification Committee’s third annual Curb Appeal Awards were presented to the NAPA auto parts store and Othello Community Hospital last week.
Representatives of the OBC went to the businesses with handsome traveling trophies they may display for a year.
The Curb Appeal contest was established in 2013 to acknowledge and thank businesses for their efforts to make their storefronts more appealing through creative landscaping and/or colorful plantings.
“This contest is an expression of appreciation for their contribution to the overall beautification of our city and to let them know they are making a positive difference in the appearance of Othello,” the OBC’s Lynette Caruthers said.
The selection committee looks at a variety of criteria, including: overall eye appeal, (color, artistic design, inviting business entryway), originality of plant materials and hardscape (planters, hardscape, good use of plant design), and maintenance of landscape (health of plants, free of weeds and garbage, manicured at appropriate intervals).
Two first-place traveling trophies are awarded, one for a small business in Othello and one for a larger business or corporation.
Napa Auto Parts is owned and operated by Mickey and Rhonda Hoots. They have dressed up their business entryway with four large red pots spilling red and purple petunias, lime green potato vine and purple fountain grass.
“The pots are magnificent,” Caruthers said.
Administrator Connie Agenbroad accepted for the Othello Community Hospital. Also recognized was groundskeeper Josh Hopwood, who keeps all plantings and large container gardens in excellent shape. The Othello Hospital Auxiliary provides plantings for the large pots.
“The Othello Beautification Committee invites everyone to stop by and visit this year’s winners,” Caruthers said. “Let them know how much we appreciate their efforts to help make Othello an inviting place to live.”
