MOSES LAKE — For Moses Lake to compete with the best teams in the state, the less decorated wrestlers in the Chiefs’ lineup will need to take a leap.

Beau Mauseth began his ascension Tuesday at Moses Lake’s jamboree. Although the rounds were just one minute long, Mauseth scored an impressive 3-2 victory over 2016 Class 2A state finalist Reese Jones of Othello.

Mauseth held a 1-0 lead after a second-round escape before both wrestlers exchanged reversals in the waning moments of the third round.

“I think it sparks something within him,” Moses Lake head coach Jaime Garza said. “It justifies why we work so hard.”

Tuesday’s jamboree was a showcase of some of the best wrestling teams across the Columbia Basin. Moses Lake began with a dual against 2015 and 2016 Class 1B/2B state champion Warden.

Warden head coach Brent Cox was happy with how his newly Class 1A team fared against the lightweights of Class 4A Moses Lake.

“Our lightweights did very well,” he said. “We knew it was going to be great competition going against someone like Moses Lake.”

The Cougars have three returning state placers in the light weights: Anthony Martinez (106), Bryce Martinez (113) and Rodrigo Ozuna (120).

The Chiefs held the edge in the middle and heavyweights. Mauseth, Bailey Sanchez, Daiman Vasquez, Payton Castro and Daniel Zermeno all picked up wins for Moses Lake.

After Warden, Moses Lake matched up with Class 2A Othello.

Chris Melo, who was a state participant for the Huskies last season, dispatched Caleb Lawson 7-3.

“He’s (Lawson) show a lot of improvement as well,” Garza said.

Against the Huskies, Zermeno was able to beat state veteran Chemi Cantu and Christien Knopp beat state veteran Ben Garza.

Moses Lake kicks off its dual meet schedule at Wenatchee on Thursday, Othello opens its season at East Valley on Dec. 8 and Warden travels to Quincy for a dual on Friday.

EPHRATA — Cameron Clark 27 points in two games at Ephrata picked up a pair of wins at its jamboree.
