Sports roundup: Othello's Dominique Martinez, Mariah DeLeon make college choice official

OTHELLO — Dominique Martinez and Mariah DeLeon have been playing softball together since they were nine years old.
That bond — between pitcher and catcher — culminated with a Class 2A state championship in May. Martinez pitched every inning of every state tournament game and DeLeon hit a go-ahead two-run double in the championship game against Fife.
In the latest chapter of their softball careers, Martinez and DeLeon made their choice of college official with a ceremony attended by about 20 guests Friday at Othello High School.
Martinez is off to the University of Hawaii and DeLeon will attend Western Oregon University.
“I’m excited to go to a new place, meet new people,” DeLeon said. “Another kind of culture of people so I’m kind of excited to start.”
Division-I Hawaii is a member of the Mountain West Conference. The Rainbow Wahine finished 24-30 overall in 2016.
Hawaii head coach Bob Coolen described Martinez to the school’s website: “Dominique is a hard throwing righty who has a nice rise ball who will challenge opposing hitters. She is also very versatile and is able to also play other positions at second, first and in the outfield as well. She’s a solid 3-4-5-type hitter.”
Division-II Western Oregon is part of the Great Northern Athletic Conference. The Wolves finished 31-24 and reached the conference tournament in 2016.
Girls bowling
Moses Lake 4, West Valley 0
MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake picked up its first win of the season, sweeping West Valley 4-0.
The Chiefs bested the Rams in the first two games 804-770 and 807-723.
Charlie Sanislo was the high roller in the first game with 196 and Danielle Garcia tallied 192 pins in the second game.
Moses Lake won both Baker games comfortable 190-165 and 183-165. Moses Lake travels to Sunnyside on Tuesday.
Women’s college basketball
Big Bend 72, Everett 68
MOSES LAKE — Big Bend rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to beat Everett 72-68 in its season opener.
The Vikings led 18-9 after the first quarter, but struggled in the second and was outscored 21-6. Led by Madison Wilcox’s 20 points and three steals, the Vikings played a strong second half and took the lead with a 27-point third quarter.
Sunnie Martinez and Emily Allan scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. Big Bend was aided by balanced scoring; all but one player contributed to the offense.
Everett’s Alexis Biggerstaff scored a team-high 17 points.
Big Bend returns to the court Dec. 1, 7 p.m., at home against Multnomah University JV.
