MATTAWA — The Wahluke High School football team finished a tough year with a 58-0 non-league win over Goldendale last week.

Coach Mike Foristiere was pleased with the effort. It showed him that the 31 underclassmen who played to the end of the season are serious about the program and the sport.

“And our quarterback was only a freshman,” he said.

Another freshman on the team, who was the backup at quarterback, has qualified – again – to compete at the Seattle Seahawks NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition. He was his age group winner last year.

Wahluke had a young team to start the season. It was still young at the end but much more experienced.

“We should do better next year,” Foristiere said. “These kids may have lost a lot of games, but they never quit battling. I was proud of how our defense played.”

The run-oriented Warriors finished the season with three 1,000-yard rushers. Two of them crossed the 1,000-yard mark in the final game.

Wahluke ran the ball for 444 yards. Daniel Ayala led with 198, and Rock Foristiere amassed 164. Juan Silva gained 54. That left the three running backs with 1,073, 1,034 and 1,077 yards respectively.

Ayala scored two touchdowns. Foristiere had three touchdowns and three 2-point conversions. Silva scored one touchdown.

Quarterback Oscar Rodriguez ran for a three-yard touchdown. He completed two of three passes for 26 yards and threw for one 3-point conversion to Daniel Tapia.

“My hat is off to the offensive line of Brian Smith, Alfredo Prudente, Ishmael Cardoso, Juan Morales, Brennan Zirker, Oscar Aguilar, Matt Yorgesen, Daniel Tapia and Gerardo Ledezma. They did a fine job,” Foristiere said.

The defense was led by Eli Barajas with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Marco Guerrero had six tackles and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned 50 yards for a score.

Juan Silva and Jesus Cisneros intercepted passes. For for Cisneros it was his fifth of the season.
