Tell the young about Jesus; they want to know

It is raining again today, and my co-workers are complaining. I grew up in the coastal regions of Washington. So I like the rain.

I remember, when I was a child, a newspaper headline that read: It has now rained for 40 days and 40 nights!

I thought that reference was great because I recognized it from my Sunday School classes. I fear now that students wouldn’t even understand it because of the lack of Bible teaching that goes on.

Being a teacher as well as a minister, I have noticed that over the last 20 years, students come to school with less and less knowledge of fundamental learning.

They don’t know nursery rhymes at all. At the middle-school level, I have to teach “Mary Had a Little Lamb” so that I can teach the students how to sing rounds in three part harmony.

I knew about Mary’s little lamb before I went to school, and I took care to impart that kind of knowledge on to my children.

Kids and adults seem to be missing the knowledge they need to understand references to history, literature and the Bible.

Now this doesn’t mean that young people don’t want to know. My students ask all sorts of questions about these topics all the time. What it does mean is that they are just not getting the exposure that is required.

What has changed? Well, fewer people are going to church so that explains the lack of biblical knowledge. They aren’t taking time to get to know their Lord and Savior or to learn about our Christian heritage.

I personally believe this lack of religious understanding creates apathy about other things to. If you don’t believe that there is an eternal life with your Lord and Savior, why work hard at living?

I can’t imagine going through life believing that there is just a pine box and dirt at the end. That could be disheartening to even the strongest soul.

I believe that we need to introduce our youth to Jesus Christ so that they understand that death is not the end. There is eternal hope through salvation.

When you understand that, then you begin to care about teaching your children everything and you create a better world to live in.

It is through God that we develop our moral compass that guides us through life and shows us what is important.
