ROYAL CITY — Coach Phil Daubel finally got the complete game effort he was seeking last week, and the Royal High girls landed their first basketball win of the season, taking down Cascade, 41-34.

However, the week did not finish on a high note. River View took the measure of the Knights, 54-18, on Saturday.

“We have to fix our problems in practice because we have a tough three-game week coming up with Burbank, Ki-Be, and Wahluke,” Daubel said.

Or the girls can play the way they did against Cascade. All of the eight who saw action scored. The game broke in Royal’s favor when the Knights outscored Cascade 10-6 in the third quarter and 15-10 in the fourth.

“I am really proud of the girls. It was a total team effort, and everyone contributed,” Daubel said. “We still have lots of work to do, but we took a giant step tonight.”

Taking a big step individually was McDarra Von Stein. She led in scoring with 14 points and rebounds with 11.

Next high scorer with seven points was Elsie Delgado. Staci Hebdon, Annabelle Booth, Jennifer Ledezma and Stephanie Rivera had four points each, and Samantha Dunn and Bianca Castellon had two each.

Other leading rebounders were Ledezma with nine, Castellon with seven, Rivera with six and Hebdon with five.

The RV contest was quite different. The Panthers broke away, 15-3, in the first quarter and never looked back. The score was 31-7 at halftime.

“We got off to a slow start and never recovered,” Daubel said. “We didn’t take care of the ball tonight, not going to be in many games with 43 turnovers.”

VonStein was limited to five points. Ledezma led the scoring with eight points. She also led in rebounds with nine.

Royal will travel to Burbank tonight and will host Kiona-Benton on Friday and Wahluke on Saturday.
