The week of the 2015-2016 waterfowl season now begins. Geese may be hunted the last nine days of the season, as well as Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. Ducks are open every day. The northern waterfowl are easily located all over Central Washington, with moderating temperatures.
The Moses Lake and Potholes Reservoir areas are hosting literally thousands of birds. This past week the Duck Taxi has been field hunting, enjoying funnel clouds of large mallards, and some great goose hunts. These greenheads have been feeding on high-protein corn in many cases for over one month. These are the biggest, toughest, easiest ducks to decoy of the whole season. Goose flights are amazing in the Moses Lake area. Do it yourself hunters can join the Royal Youth Boosters (www.royalhuntclub.org) to gain paid access to some fine opportunities. The sand dune area or Potholes Reservoir continues to be encroached upon by ice as of Jan. 15. All we need to make hunting in the sand dunes amazing is one strong south wind.
Due to ice, the only launch available is the Blythe Bay access located between MarDon Resort and Potholes State Park, on the south shores of Potholes Reservoir; this is a rough launch at the public access of gravel.
This is the first of three years that we haven’t had open water to walleye fish all winter. Last year and the year before walleye catching with blade baits was amazing from New Year’s Day through March. Don’t miss the boat, enjoy a fresh meal of 2016 walleye with some of Gary Roach’s shore lunch.
There is no safe ice to ice fish in the Potholes Recreation area.
