MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake had its shot, figuratively and literally.

Tied 66-66 with Coeur d’Alene, Cesar Sandoval turned and fired a potential game-winner that clanged off the front rim as time expired.

The brief euphoria of the rally to tie dissipated in overtime as Sandoval, Ricardo Gonzalez and Isaiah Thomas fouled out. The Vikings took advantage of the shorthanded Chiefs and hung on to win 81-75.

Rebounding and weak-side defense were the source of frustration for head coach John Hohman after the game.

“What creates the need for that weak-side is the middle penetration or that penetration and they didn’t do things a lot of things super, but they did those things great,” he said. “Where they drop that guy to the opposite block and they really took advantage of it. I mean, they did a nice job.”

In its last nonleague game, Moses Lake (3-0, 8-3) battled a physical Coeur d’Alene team and trailed 66-63 late after Joey Naccarato sunk a turnaround jumper. However, with timing winding down, Ryan Karstetter buried a three-point from the left wing to tie the game with 3.6 seconds left.

Karstetter, who earlier in the season joked about his lack of scoring, put together a nine-point first quarter, 17 points total and the biggest shot of his brief varsity career.

“I’ve known Ryan since he was a little kid, a baby,” Hohman said. “I don’t know when it happened. It was like when he was seven years old. I knew he was a shooter. He might not look pretty when he shoots, but I wouldn’t change his shot for anything in the world.”

The Vikings still had one more chance to win in regulation.

That’s when Thomas stepped in.

On a long pass attempt, Thomas slid in front of Naccarato and drew a charge that gave Moses Lake the ball back with just over two seconds left in the game.

“He’s (Thomas) a great leader, he really is, and I don’t talk enough about him,” Hohman said. “The amount of respect I have for him. That’s a nice thing about those seniors is that they’re willing to give everything they have for one thing: the team.”

After the Chiefs took over possession, Sandoval got a decent look from the top of the key that fell just short. Sandoval scored a team-high 22 points.

Moses Lake hosts Sunnyside Saturday, 7:30 p.m., with first place in the Columbia Basin Big Nine on the line.
