MATTAWA — Wahluke High School’s Victoria Gaytan swept through the field to win the 170-pound title at the Hanfor Winter Cup wrestling tournament on Dec. 22.

There were only two Wahluke girls entered in the meet. The second was Eva Herrera at 155. She finished fourth.

Not only did Gaytan sweep; She also brezed. She had a bye in the second round, but she pinned opponents in the first, third and fourth rounds.

The pin that brought the trophy to the Warrior senior was over Savannah Towle of Burbank.

Herrera started the same way in her bracket, pinning her first two opponents. She took out Adriana Bonner from Richland in the first round and Victoria Mendoza of Richland in the second round.

She was defeated by Aylin Gonzalez of Sunnyside and Victoria Rubio from Quincy to finish fourth.

Eva is 155 and she is also a senior both have been wrestling for 4 years.

The Hanford Winter Cup includes teams from all over Washington state, Oregon and Idaho.

“Victoria and Herrera both worked very hard,” coach Carolina Miraontes said.
