Othello's Anthony Ruiz, Quincy's Victor Tafoya CWAC all-league first team
Just two days after finishing his high school career as a three-time state placer, Anthony Ruiz (195) of Othello was named to the Central Washington Athletic Conference all-league first team.
Ruiz was undefeated in the CWAC this season and lost in the state finals to three-time champion Dylan Beeler of Clarkston.
Quincy’s Victor Tafoya joined Ruiz on the first team.
Othello had eight total selections with four on the second team and three on honorable mention. Newly crowned state champion Alejandro Cardenas (126) joined teammates Chris Melo (106), Collin Freeman (152) and Reese Jones (160) on the second team.
Jones, like Ruiz, was a state runner-up this season.
Jeremy Mendez (113), Abel Gomez (170) and Chemi Cantu (285) represented the Huskies on honorable mention.
Quincy had four selections: Tafoya, Raul Barajas (132), Rey Rubio (285) and Iche Ramirez (182).
Barajas and Rubio made the second team, while Ramirez was honorable mention. Ramirez placed fifth at this year’s Mat Classic.
Ephrata’s Drew Anderson (182) and Rolo Reyes (220) both made the second team. Cole Spencer (145) was honorable mention.
Toppenish’s John Cerna was the CWAC Coach of the Year. Also, Toppenish repeated as Class 2A state champions.
Warden and Othello girls with seven selections each
Warden and Othello girls wrestling each had seven make all-league teams.
The Cougars’ Kassandra Ozuna (100) and Tania Dominguez (115) were first team. Dominguez finished fifth at state this season.
Mariah Garza (105), Alyssa Edson (110), Daniel Jolley (190) and Karely Garcia (235) made the second team. Edson finished sixth at the Mat Classic, losing to Quincy’s Kateri Rowell (110) 11-4 in her final match.
Rowell was a CWAC first team selection and took fifth at state.
Warden’s Vanessa Morales (110) was honorable mention.
Regional champion Nikki Velazquez (130) of Othello made the first team. Velazquez finished sixth in state.
Othello had three wrestlers on the second team: Jackie Peguero (115), Elizabeth Giles (125) and Kaylee Martinez (140). Martinez won her final match at state and placed fifth.
Iyalhye Barraza (120), Ruby Villalobos (125) and Yoshi Gutierrez (135) were honorable mention for the Huskies.
Othello’s J.J. Martinez was named Coach of the Year.
