5 Cougars named all-league
With the district championship just days away, Warden was recognized with five players on the Central Washington 2B South all-league teams.
High-scoring wing JR Delgado was named to the first team, while Adam Richins made the second team.
Senior Pedro Gonzalez and Sergio Vela as well as junior Tanner Skone were honorable mention.
Warden head coach Wes Richins was named Coach of the Year.
The Cougars finished 8-2 in the CW2B South and wrapped up their second straight league championship. More, the Cougars finished the regular season ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press Class 2B poll.
After two wins to start the district tournament, Warden as wrapped up a regional berth and will play for the district title Saturday against Brewster at Eastmont High School.
Also, Soap Lake’s Brayden Winters was first team and Daniel Delgado was second team.
Mabton’s Roy Zavala was the Player of the Year.
3 Cougars all-league on the girls’ side
Shania Kisler, Bailey Whitney and Allycia Gonzales were named all-league recently.
Kisler made the first team, Whitney the second and Gonzales honorable mention.
Warden bounced back from a difficult 2014-15 season to make the district tournament this season. For his effort, Warden head girls basketball coach Dan Caballero was named Coach of the Year.
Warden also received the sportsmanship award.
Soap Lake’s Samantha White and Evelin Lopez both were honorable mention.
Mabton’s Irene Pruneda was the Player of the Year.
Girls basketball
Moses Lake Christian Academy 55, Thorp-Easton 12
MOSES LAKE — Anna Yarbro scored 20 points in the first quarter and Moses Lake Christian Academy routed Thorp-Easton 55-12.
Yarbro finished with a game-high 22.
“Everybody’s going to be healthy going into the district championship so that’s good,” head coach Josh Kast said.
Every Lion entered the scoring column. Dani Sandberg and Alex Toevs chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.
MLCA will meet Entiat in the district title game Friday, 8 p.m., at Ephrata High School. Entiat upset Pateros 52-40 in the other semifinal game.
“They’ve got a couple big girls inside and a couple young guards who are talented.”
A win Friday will advance the Lions to regionals.
College basketball
Second quarter dooms Big Bend women
PASCO — Big Bend was unable to rally from a 26-point halftime deficit, losing to Columbia Basin 76-56.
The second quarter doomed Big Bend as the Vikings were outscored 24-4. The Vikings struggled from the outside, shooting just four for 21 from three-point range. Big Bend’s shooting woes were exacerbated by shooting 56 percent from the free throw line.
Maryah Tipping led the way for the Vikings with 13 points and nine rebounds. Max Shelley and Deanna Manning added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The loss dropped Big Bend to 2-9 in the NWAC East.
Big Bend returns home to play Walla Walla Saturday at 2 p.m.
