Bug art class at the museum

| February 16, 2016 5:00 AM

MOSES LAKE — It was a small crowd but an eager one that turned out for Bug Art for Kids, an art class hosted at the Moses Lake Museum and Art Center. The class was designed for kids ages 7 to 12. Three children showed up to exercise their creativity with paint brushes.

The paintings began as a simple outline of a bug on a sheet of paper. As instructor Kathaleen McFarland led them through the steps, the young artists filled in first grass and trees, then sky, and finally the bugs themselves. All materials were provided by the museum.

McFarland teaches a number of painting classes for all ages through the museum. With many of the classes, she enjoys starting out with Impressionist painters like Georgia O’Keeffe and Claude Monet and incorporating their styles into the classes’ projects.

McFarland also taught a class later in the day called Self Portrait with a Pet, in which students were invited to bring a photo of their favorite pet and turn it into folk art.
