Middle quarters undo Royal girls against River View
ROYAL CITY — River View was too much to handle in the second and third quarters last Saturday, and the Royal Knights dropped a SCAC East girls basketball contest, 56-41.
Royal started out strong, taking the first period, 14-7. It finished strong with a 14-11 fourth period. However, RV took the second and third quarters by a combined 38-16.
Jennifer Ledezma led Royal scoring with 11 points, and she corralled three rebounds. Josie Phillips and Sophia Rodriguez scored eight points each. They collected two and three rebounds respectively.
Emma Wilhelm had six points with two rebounds and two assists. Staci Hebdon and Sam Dunn had three points each. Staci had two rebounds and four assists, Sam had three rebounds and two assists. Annabelle Booth had two points and four rebounds.
“We had a hard time containing River View’s number 23,” coach Bud Wilhelm said. “She had the hot hand, making seven 3-pointers on us.”
The outcome left Royal 0-2 in the division race. The Knights had lost Friday at Warden, 61-44, even though they trailed by only 40-35 after three quarters.
Emma Wilhelm scored 11 points and picked off five rebounds. Staci Hebdon had five points four assists and three steals.
Jennifer Ledezma drew the tough assignment of guarding Bailey Whitney and did well. On offense she scored five points and had five rebounds. Sophia Rodriguez, Savanna Buster and Yajaira Michel scored two points each. Samantha Dunn scored one.
Royal will play at Burbank tonight and then take a break until the Wilbur Ellis Tournament at the Yakima Sun Dome at the end of the month.
