Glenda Horn September 26, 2016

Glenda Marie Weaver Horn passed away on September 26, 2016. She was 92 years young. Glenda was living in Federal Way, WA at the time of her passing.

Glenda was born in Moundville, MO, daughter of Joshua Glenn Weaver and Naomi Marie Whitworth Weaver. She is survived by two brothers: Bob Weaver and Ben Weaver and Ben’s spouse Joanne. She is also survived by daughters and sons-in-law Carole Butkus and spouse Pete, Deborah Martin and spouse Jim; her grandchildren Heather Pendleton-Helm and spouse Dede, Hilary Gennaro and spouse AJ, Rob Koehler and spouse Jaime and Betsy Harvey and spouse Bert; plus four great-grandchildren, Austin and Olivia Koehler and Jack and Ben Harvey. She is also survived by brother-in-law Don Loynes, plus nieces, nephews, cousins and their families located primarily in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, California and Missouri. She was preceded in death by her spouse Bob Horn, her parents Glenn and Naomi Weaver, brother Max Weaver and spouse Marge, sister Betty Plummer and spouse Spence, sister Sue Loynes, sister-in-law Nancy Weaver, and grandson Scott Helm.

Glenda graduated from high school in Nevada, MO and then moved to Idaho where she met her future husband, Robert Horn. While Bob served in the Navy during World War II, she worked for the Courtney record label in Los Angeles, first in the pressing room and then in the office. After the war, Bob joined his father’s construction company and Glenda worked as the company’s bookkeeper. In the early 1950’s, she and Bob settled in Connell where they ran a drive-in and the bowling alley and Bob had a small construction business. She worked for attorney Bob Walker for several years. She was a whiz with numbers and eventually went to work at SeaFirst Bank in Connell. In 1964, Othello First National Bank was established and Glenda was asked to come on board as Operations Supervisor. ONB purchased Othello First National in 1966. Several years later U. S. Bank acquired ONB. Bob ran their farm during these years. Bob and Glenda were active members in Gideon Lutheran Church in Connell and Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Othello. In 1977 U.S. Bank promoted Glenda to Branch Manager in Twisp. They sold the farm and moved to Twisp and Bob formed R. H. Horn Electric. She served as the Branch Manager in Twisp until she retired in 1991. She was a member of Business and Professional Women while living in Othello, and while living in Twisp, served as a councilmember on the Twisp City Council from 1989 to 1995. She was one of the women who paved the way for others, such as being the first woman to attend the Northwest Agriculture Lending School at Washington State University. She was also one of the first women to be promoted to corporate officer by U.S. Bank. She lived in Twisp until 1998, when she moved to Oregon to be near her daughter Debby and son-in-law Jim. In her later years, she lived with her daughter Carole and son-in-law Pete prior to moving to assisted living. Even as her body weakened, her mind remained active and sharp.

Glenda was an extremely talented musician with a beautiful voice, and during most of her life she performed in the church choir, and as a soloist for many events. One of the highlights of her life was being selected by her tour group to perform a vocal solo in St. Anne’s Chapel in the old city of Jerusalem. She sang the hymn, “I Walked Where Jesus Walked”.

She loved her family and friends and loved to be around them and cook for them. We all remember her fantastic pies! (And everything else she cooked!) She was one of the authors of our family cookbook and you can find one of her recipes in the cookbook, “America’s Hometown Recipe Book: 712 Favorite Recipes from Main Street, USA”. Glenda was a very talented knitter, and many people were lucky recipients of one of her hand-made, beautiful gifts. Her family and friends were often delighted and surprised when Glenda would flash her sharp wit; she was fast with a joke and had impeccable timing. After moving to Twisp, she became an active member of the Methow Valley United Methodist Church, including serving as church Treasurer. For two years, Glenda and her daughter Deb shared the results of their excellent cooking skills with the campers at the church’s summer youth camp.

A memorial service will be held at the Methow Valley United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 17, 2017. Pastor Gordon Hutchins will be officiating. For those who would like to make a donation in Memory of Glenda Horn, donations can be made to: Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Othello.
