Sports roundup: Moses Lake crowns two Tri-State champs, finishes seventh

COEUR D’ALENE — Hunter Cruz (152) and Chandler Fluaitt (285) remained perfect on the season, finishing atop the Tri-State podium in their respective weight classes.

Cruz moved to 11-0 and beat White River’s Jack Ervien 9-1 in the finals.

Fluaitt capped his dominant tournament run with a second-round pin of Orting’s Kenny Marll. Fluaitt reached the finals with pins in the first two rounds and a 10-1 major decision in the semifinals.

Moses Lake moved up from 10th to finished seventh in the team race with 134 points.

Havre of Montana edged Post Falls by 1.5 points in the team race; Mead finished third with 152 points.

Nick Hara (132) was unable to repeat as Tri-State champion, losing to North Central’s Clai Quintanilla in the championship match 6-1.

Payton Castro rallied from a second-round loss to win five matches in a row. Castro placed fourth after he was pinned in the third-place match by Coeur d’Alene’s Alex Marshall.

Riley Burgess (98) took sixth and Daiman Vasquez (182) finished eighth.

Othello’s Reese Jones (170) finished third. Jones outlasted Angelo Loera of Lake Stevens 2-0 in the placing match. The Huskies had two other placers: Chris Melo (106) and TJ Martinez (195) both finished fourth.

Othello scored 65 team points and was 21st.

Quincy totaled seven points and finished 51st.

History was made at the tournament as Lakeside’s Dalton Young (138) became just the third wrestler to win four Tri-State championships.

Havre’s Parker Filius (145) was the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.

Ephrata 10th at Cadet Classic

YAKIMA — Ephrata had a trio of top-five placers at the Cadet Classic in Yakima.

Sammy Flores (106) finished fourth; Cole Spencer (182) and Drew Anderson (195) both placed fifth.

Reigning Class 2A champion Toppenish won the tournament with 253.5 points; Ephrata took 10th with 81 points.

Boys basketball

Moses Lake 69, Sunnyside 52

SUNNYSIDE — Zach Phillips scored a game-high 28 points and Moses Lake beat Sunnyside 69-52.

The Chiefs led by three points at halftime before outscoring the Grizzlies 34-20 over the final two quarters.

Evan McLean added 11 points to the balanced scoring attack.

Trey Sanchez led Sunnyside with 25 points.

Prosser 63, Ephrata 55

EPHRATA — Ephrata was outscored 16-10 in the fourth quarter and lost to Prosser 63-55.

Cameron Clark scored a team-high 21 points for the Tigers. Caden Blankenship scored 12 points.

Grandview 66, Othello 61

OTHELLO — Othello let a big lead slip away in its 66-61 loss to Grandview.

The Huskies led 21-7 after the first quarter, but were outscored over the next three.

Junior Michael Gutierrez scored a team-high 17 points.

East Valley 70, Quincy 47

QUINCY — Daniel Chavez scored a team-high 16 points, but Quincy lost to East Valley 70-47.

Warden 62, Columbia 54

WARDEN — Warden rallied for the second straight night and beat Columbia 62-54.

The Cougars scored 25 points in the fourth quarter to erase a three-point deficit.

Adam Richins had 17 points and JR Delgado had 15.

Girls basketball

Sunnyside 60, Moses Lake 49

SUNNYSIDE — Sunnyside dealt Moses Lake its first loss 60-49 behind Emilee Maldonado’s 31 points.

The trio of Jamie Loera, Abby Rathbun and Jessica Olson combined to score 41 of Moses Lake’s 49 points; Loera led the way with 20.

The Chiefs trailed 17-8 after the first quarter.

Prosser 66, Ephrata 60 (OT)

EPHRATA — Ephrata rallied to force overtime, but was outscored 10-4 in the extra period and lost to Prosser 66-60.

Katelyn Ostrowski scored 16 points and Avery Mickelsen had 14.

Grandview 58, Othello 39

OTHELLO — Macy Hampton scored 23 points, but it wasn’t enough as Othello lost to Grandview 58-39.

Tanaya Andersen added eight points for the Huskies.

East Valley 54, Quincy 15

QUINCY — Quincy was routed by East Valley 54-15.

Alysha Donovan scored four points for the Jacks.

Columbia 55, Warden 44

WARDEN — Warden led 11-7 after the first quarter, but lost to Columbia 55-44.

Natalie Cole led the Cougars with 12 points; Bailey Whitney had nine.

Women’s college basketball

Big Bend 67, Mt. Hood 59

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend finished 3-0 at its crossover tournament after a 67-59 win against Mt. Hood.

Emily Allan shot 7-of-13 and scored a game-high 22 points. Forwards Hailey Garrity and Maryah Tipping scored 12 points each.

Men’s college basketball

Big Bend 1-1 over the weekend

EVERETT — Big Bend split its last two games at the Everett Crossover.

Big Bend beat host Everett 94-87 on Saturday and lost to Pierce 82-74 on Sunday.

Jacob McCord had 31 points, nine rebounds and five assists against the Trojans. McCord led the Runnin’ Vikes with 22 points against the Raiders.
