SOAP LAKE — Soap Lake assistant coach Austin Chamberlin made the strongest move in the paint Saturday afternoon, proposing to his girl Hailey Boyd during the halftime intermission. Hailey said yes and the Eagles (5-1, 4-1) rolled to a 48-13 victory over Moses Lake Christian.

Soap Lake senior Albert Vargas led all scorers with 12 points and seven rebounds. Eagles wing Isaiah Ewing had eight points and Jackson Gray finished up with seven points and four rebounds.

Moses Lake Christian’s Ben Caballero led the Lions with seven points and eight rebounds.

“We were able to get everybody some playing time and get them up to playing at our level and intensity,” said Eagles coach Agustin Pedregon, who coaches both the boys and girls teams. “The older guys have that discipline, so bringing the younger guys along was our focus tonight. “We still have a long way to go, it’s a work in progress.”

What the Eagles progressed to do was run the floor and beat the Lions to the hoop. Ewing scored six of his eight points in the third quarter. Vargas was right there with him, scoring six of his 12 points in the third when the Eagles put the hammer down. They did it on the run and the did it with smothering defense that held the Lions to just two points in the second half.

“We like to get up and down the floor, that’s our style,” said Winters. “We’re not the biggest team, but when we get the outlet and get moving we’re pretty good.”

The Eagles didn’t blow anybody out of the water, but they were consistent with their attack, which was a mixture of running and the half court. They scored 12 points in the second quarter to take a 23-11 lead into the locker room at the half.

“That’s the thing about our team. Everybody can run and everybody can play offense,” said Jayden Decker. “You can always improve, but I thought our half-court was pretty good tonight. It depends on who we have inside, but we like to rotate it up top, then swing it inside.”
