Sports roundup: Moses Lake boys split games

WALLA WALLA — Moses Lake split a pair of non-league games against Mid-Columbia Conference opponents.

The Chiefs routed Kennewick Friday at home 74-48 and fell on the road to Walla Walla 64-56.

Junior guard Zach Phillips scored a game-high 30 points against the Blue Devils; Ryan Karstetter added 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The Chiefs took a 25-24 lead into halftime before Walla Walla outscored Moses Lake 40-31 over the next 16 minutes. Mitch Lesmeister paced the home team with 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Ephrata 73, Grandview 66

EPHRATA — Ephrata staved off Gunner Chronis’ 32 points, beating Grandview 73-66.

The Tigers rallied from a 19-9 deficit after the first quarter, outscoring the Greyhounds in each of the next three. Cameron Clark matched Chronis’ scoring outburst with a game-high 35 points.

Josh Benthem and Jake Oxos added 11 points each.

Wapato 72, Othello 62

OTHELLO — Kyler Villarreal and Jonathan Garza scored 11 points each, but Othello fell in its CWAC opener to Wapato 72-62.

The Wolves were led by Rodrigo Campos who notched a double-double of 27 points and 12 rebounds. Hunter Jacob added 23 points.

Othello trailed by three at halftime, but a 22-13 third quarter allowed Wapato to gain separation.

Selah 82, Quincy 31

SELAH — Elijah Pepper nearly recorded a triple-double and Selah routed Quincy 82-31.

Pepper had 26 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds.

Gates Petersen and Trajan Trevino scored seven points each for the Jacks.

Warden starts season with two blowouts

WARDEN — JR Delgado scored 60 points combined in two games, leading Warden to a pair of blowout wins,

The Cougars beat Mabton 85-57 and Highland 76-25.

Delgado stuffed the state sheet against the Vikings with 36 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals. Adam Richins added 22 points five assists.

Against Highland, Delgado poured in 24 points and eight assists. Tanner Skone scored 16 points.

Soap Lake 51, Bridgeport 43

SOAP LAKE — Soap Lake opened its season with a win against Bridgeport 51-43.

Girls basketball

Grandview 64, Ephrata 51

EPHRATA — Grandview pulled away in the fourth quarter, handing Ephrata a 64-51 loss.

The Greyhounds outscored the Tigers 18-9 in the final period.

Avery Mickelsen led Ephrata with 22 points.

Wapato 70, Othello 14

OTHELLO — Othello failed to reach double figures scoring in any quarter and lost to Wapato 70-14.

Macy Hampton scored seven of the Huskies’ 14 points.

Selah 73, Quincy 32

SELAH — Quincy fell behind 27-7 after one quarter and lost to Selah 73-32.

Hailey McKee led the Jacks with eight points

Warden splits a pair of games

WARDEN — Warden struggled on the road and lost its season opener to Mabton 63-41.

Bailey Whitney and Natalie Cole each recorded double-doubles; Whitney notched 13 points and 12 rebounds and Cole had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Warden rebounded Saturday to edge Highland 42-38.

Bailey Whitney led the Cougars with 17 points.

Soap Lake 34, Bridgeport 23

SOAP LAKE — Soap Lake played solid defense and beat Bridgeport 34-23.

Wrestling

Quincy 42, Warden 36

QUINCY — It was a dual of runs for Quincy and Warden.

The Jacks built a 36-0 lead with seven straight wins. Conversely, Warden won five out of the next six matches by fall to mount a furious comeback.

The six-point difference came when Quincy’s Jose Buenrostro (106) pinned Tony Martinez in the first round, giving the Jacks a 42-18 lead.

Warden took a forfeit at 113 pounds before Anthony Martinez (120) and Bryce Martinez (126) won by fall. Tyrone Mendez (195), Robert Arredondo (220) and Tommy Pruneda (285) also all won by fall for Warden.

Raul Barajas (132) edged Rodrigo Ozuna 6-5 before Mario Mercado (138), Oswaldo Perez (145), Devon Salcedo (152), Tanner Wallace (160) and Ray Robinson pinned their opponents. Victor Tafoya (170) won 4-2 against Elijah Gonsalez.

For Quincy, freshman Ray Vargas (220) took first at the Bob Mars Invitational. Wallace was also a champion.

Ephrata ninth at Davis Invitational

YAKIMA — Ephrata totaled 60.5 team points and finished ninth at the Davis Invitational.

Defending 2A state champion Toppenish won the tournament with 217.5 points and six champions.

Men’s college basketball

Big Bend third at Bigfood-Cardinal Classic

SPOKANE — Big Bend finished 2-1 at the Bigfoot-Cardinal Classic to nab third place.

The Runnin’ Vikes beat Everett 105-100 in their tournament opener. Jacob McCord recorded a monster double-double of 38 points and 10 rebounds.

Big Bend fell to Pierce in the semifinals 93-90. McCord and Jai Jai Ely scored 24 and 23 points, respectively.

Big Bend bounced back to take third place, beating Whatcom 91-87. McCord added another double-double of 29 points and 15 rebounds.

Women’s college basketball

Big Bend wins a pair

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend beat the Columbia Basin All-Stars 73-37 and Langara College 80-53.

Big Bend received balanced scoring against Langara as all but one player scored. Emily Allan led the Vikings with 15 points. Maddie Williams and Hailey Garrity added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
