MOSES LAKE — A local organization supporting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault received a donation of 70 handmade teddy bears, courtesy of the ASB council at Big Bend Community College.

Kim Jackson, BBCC’s director of student programs, and the college’s mascot Thor dropped off the donation Thursday at the offices of New Hope Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services. The teddy bears are made from hand towels and will be donated to children aided by New Hope. The project originated from a post on a craft and hobby website, said BBCC director of communications Matt Killebrew.

Killebrew said ASB officers have committed to at least three community service projects “focused on giving back.” The group has crafted chew toys for animals at the Daze of Camelot animal shelter and sponsored a blood drive. A second blood drive is scheduled for January, Killebrew said. The ASB also plans to conduct a food drive for the on-campus food bank, the Viking Pantry.

“Our ASB officers set leadership goals early in the year to give back through community service projects, and they have exceeded their goal,” Jackson said. “They have been a great group to work with.”

Associated Student Body executive officers include Matthew Alvarado, president; Reid Jackson, vice-president; Marisol Lozano, secretary; Auggie Francis, treasurer; Jason Estrada, public information officer and Morgan Goslin, programming director.
