Prep roundup: Jessica Olson's 17 points lead Moses Lake past Southridge
KENNEWICK — Jessica Olson scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter and Moses Lake opened its regular season with a 56-18 win at Southridge.
Both teams started slow, but the superior talent of the Chiefs provided a 22-6 halftime lead.
Eventually, the offense began to flow.
“Third and fourth quarter we kind of kicked it into gear,” head coach Matt Strophy said.
Jamie Loera notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Abby Rathbun hounded Southridge leading scorer Ellie Smith, holding the Idaho State commit to four points.
“She was all over the place defensively,” Strophy said.
Maggie Strom added five points.
Ephrata 62, Cascade 6
EPHRATA — Ephrata was able to play in transition and blew out Cascade 62-6.
Madison Martin led the Tigers with 23 points.
“Kids played really good,” head coach Aaron Ross said. “They played with a lot of energy and a lot of excitement.”
Avery Mickelsen was also in double figures with 11 points.
Quincy 38, Wahluke 34
QUINCY — Clutch free throws were the difference as Quincy outlasted Wahluke 38-34.
The Jacks stepped up to the line and sank four straight free throws to break a 34-34 tie.
“The girls were just sticking to the game plan,” head coach Cory Medina said. “They kept playing aggressive.”
Rachel Faw scored eight points; Ivania Chavez and Erica Camacho added seven points each.
Entiat 64, Moses Lake Christian Academy 9
ENTIAT — The youthful Moses Lake Christian Academy lost on the road to Entiat 64-9.
The Lions have two eight-graders on the roster this season. No other details were available by press time.
Boys basketball
Ephrata 62, Cascade 56
EPHRATA — Ephrata withstood hot shooting from Cascade and won 62-56.
“They shot the ball well all night against us,” head coach Brandon Evenson said.
The Tigers held a nine-point lead at halftime before the Kodiaks cut into the deficit in the second half.
Cameron Clark made two straight deep three-pointers in the fourth quarter to give Ephrata some breathing room. Clark finished with 21 points.
Caden Blankenship had 16 points and Josh Benthem added 10.
Entiat 35, Moses Lake Christian Academy 34
ENTIAT — Moses Lake Christian Academy was dealt a close loss to Entiat 35-34.

Moses Lake 55, Wenatchee 15
WENATCHEE — Moses Lake began its regular season with a 55-15 win at Wenatchee.
Beau Mauseth (170), Daiman Vasquez (195), Daniel Zermeno (285), Nick Hara (138) and Cyrus Knoll (152) won by fall. Payton Castro (220) and Hunter Cruz (160) picked up wins by way of technical fall.
“We really were, in my opinion, pretty impressive on the top,” head coach Jaime Garza said.
Caleb Lawson (106) and August Gibson (120) won by forfeit; Thomas Hamm (126) won by decision.
Boys swimming
Moses Lake earns state qualifying time
MOSES LAKE — It didn’t take long for Moses Lake’s 200 freestyle relay team to qualify for the state meet.
Kyle Jorgensen, Ryan Madrishin, Noah Heaps and Ander Molitor clocked in at 1:31.74 — an automatic state qualifying time. Moses Lake edged Wenatchee by just over a second in the race.
Jorgensen and Molitor also placed first and second in the 50 freestyle.
Girls Bowling
Moses Lake 4, Ellensburg 0
MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake was able to sweep Class 2A Ellensburg 4-0 at home.
