MOSES LAKE — Grand Coulee cowboy Shane Proctor hobbled to the staging area behind the bucking chutes Thursday night favoring his right foot after getting stepped on during his no-score ride during the saddle broncs.

It was just another day in the life of a PRCA cowboy. He pulled his boot off and massaged a bruised foot, wincing a bit with the daily grind. Where an NFL rookie might sit out the rest of the day at spring training, there is no injured reserve in rodeo.

Three events later, Proctor showed the Thursday night crowd the stuff that won him a world championship in 2011, riding Blue Bells to a score of 85 to take the first-day lead at the 73rd Moses Lake Roundup.

“That was a bull I didn’t know. He went into the spin early, away from my hand to the left,” said Proctor, who has qualified for the National Finals Rodeo three times and is headed back again this year. “When they spin like that, you have to use a little more balance. When they’re going into your hand, you can tie down a little bit more.”

Blue Bell started into a violent clockwise spin right out the chute, just a hard turning, strong Corey & Lange Flying Diamond Rodeo Stock bull. Proctor settled in and matched Blue Bell jump for jump with a ride that showed why he’s one of the top 10 bull riders in the world.

“I like these big northwest bulls because they fit my style more,” Proctor explained. “That’s what I grew up riding. When we go down south, they’re a little smaller and a little faster. But I like the big, more powerful ones.”

Bull riding fans were treated a couple of big rides right away. Derek Kolbaba from Walla Walla put up an 82.5 on the first ride of the night on Dairy Gold. Proctor did one better on the second ride.

Chet Johnson went into the night’s saddle bronc competition ranked 16th in the world. The Douglas, Wyo. cowboy posted a 78-point ride on Dance Hall. But it was Layton Green from Meeting Creek, Alberta had the big ride of the night with an 82-point ride on Kung Fu.

“I was on this horse in Salinas (Kan.), which is a really good horse,” Johnson said. “He gives you all the timing in the world, which is what you want, that jump and kick. When he does that, I can do my spurring motion and match him jump for jump.”

LeRoy Eash from Fortine, Mont. put up a 75.5 on Classic Fox and Merrill, Ore. cowboy Tucker Hill posted a 73 on Picture Perfect to round off the top saddle bronc scores.

Bareback horse Trip Wire is one of Corey & Lange Flying Diamond Rodeo Stock’s NFR horses and the big white and brown horse did not disappoint. He blew out of the chute with Wyatt Bloom, Bend, Ore. aboard. The world-class bareback horse went straight out hard, turned back to the chutes. To his credit, Bloom settled in and rode Trip Wire to the top bareback score of the night and a 77.

Clayton Moore from Pouce Coup, B.C. helped his status at 17th in the world standings with the best steer wrestling time of the night in 4.4 seconds. Jason Thomas went into the night ranked second in the world and put up a 5.2 to stay in the chase. Jake Kraupie from Bridgeport, Neb., also put up a 5.2.

Levi Simpson and Jeremy Buhler posted the best team roping time of 5.3 seconds. Viki Friedrich had the fastest barrel racing time with a 17.79 ride. The Moses Lake Roundup continues tonight with the pre-show beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the rodeo starts at 7:30 p.m.
