Feed your garden, let Jesus feed your soul
These last few weeks, I have had some time to sit and observe the world around me. One of the things I enjoy looking at is my flower garden.
This garden is a 10-foot by 10-foot area just off my patio that I fill with a mixed variety of flowers. I never have a plan when I plant it. Instead I just buy annuals that are appealing to me and I plant them randomly throughout the square.
It usually turns out beautiful but last year was the exception.
I did all the things I usually do when planting. I rototilled the soil, I dug big holes for the plants and I watered, but the flowers did not grow.
By mid-July everything was dead. I was shocked and amazed at the results because I had put organic fertilizer on the bed the winter before (actually it was cow droppings from the field) so I thought I had provided food for the plants.
After a little research on Google, I discovered that flower beds that are contained and used year after year have to be fertilized weekly.
Holy cow, I hadn’t provided nearly enough food for my starving plants. This year is different. I have set up a rigorous feeding schedule that has produced amazing flowers.
I guess other people knew about this feeding need long before I did because when I asked the girl at Tonnemaker’s orchard how she got her flowers to bloom so well, she said, “Oh, lots and lots of fertilizer.”
This whole flower debacle, has made me realize that nothing grows without food. As Christians, we need to make sure we are feeding our souls.
Do you take time to fertilize your mind with scripture so that you know what God expects from you? Scripture’s job is to help us know our Creator and develop a relationship with Him.
Taking time every day (or at least a couple times a week) to dig into the scriptures helps you understand all that God has done and all He provides in a Christian life.
Being part of a Bible study with friends can be really rewarding.
In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 it says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the people of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Feeding your soul with scripture readings will help you to live a better life. It encourages you in your daily work and helps you avoid sin and sinful situations.
But most importantly, it helps you understand Jesus and your Christian heritage. It makes you part of the Christian story.
Jesus’s story didn’t end with the cross and resurrection. He is with you today. He is still writing the Christian story and you can be a big part of it.
Don’t let yourself be like my flower bed and run out of food. Let Jesus feed your soul today.
