Is there a God? Can the Bible be trusted?

When I was young, I remember my dad turning off the headlights of the car for a brief moment. It was pitch dark and impossible to see where we were going. When the lights came back on, I remember how thankful I was for the light shining ahead.

I have come to appreciate the Bible for the same reason. It shines a light on the path of life, helping me to know where I have come from and where I am going. “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path,” reads the New Living Translation of Psalm 119:105.

Like everyone else, I had to ask the question, “How can I know if there is a God?”

The complex design of life and nature was proof there had to be a God. For an intelligent design always points to an intelligent designer. This answer leads to more questions. “If God exists, what is he like? Can I trust the Bible to tell me the truth about him?”

In Isaiah 46:9, 10 God says he knows the future. “I am God – I alone! I am God, and there is no one else like Me. Only I can tell you what is going to happen even before it happens.”

The story of Daniel 2 happened 2,600 years ago. The king of Babylon had a dream. He asked his wise men for help for they were supposed to have connections with the gods. “Tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can give me its interpretation.”

However, they admitted they could not help the king. So the king ordered them to be put to death, for they professed to be something they were not.

After praying, Daniel was able to share the dream and the interpretation. The king saw a large image made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, and the feet were made of iron mixed with clay. Then a rock came and broke the image into pieces. Each metal represented a kingdom that would rule over that part of the world. The fourth kingdom would be divided.

In world history we learn how Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome ruled that area. Then Rome broke up into the nations of Europe. Many have tried to unite it as one kingdom, but the prophecy said, “They will not adhere to one another,” according to Daniel 2:43.

A simple prophecy that has accurately been fulfilled gave me evidence there is a God and the Bible can be trusted.
