Canada: City Scope Report on Montreal Market

Montréal is located in the province of Québec and is Canada’s second most populous city at 1.9 million. The Greater Montréal Area (GMA) is also the second largest agglomeration in Canada, stretching over 4,258 sq km/1,644 sq miles, and with an estimated population of 4 million. It is located in the southern part of Québec, on the St. Lawrence River. It includes the densely populated Island of Montréal, Laval, and Longueuil. It also includes semi-rural cities and towns on the fringe of Montréal. It is a 90-minute flight from Boston and New York City to Montréal. This report contains information on the market in the city as well as opportunities for U.S. exporters.

Canada: City Scope Report on Toronto Market

Toronto is located in the province of Ontario and is Canada’s most populous city at 2.6 million. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has an estimated population of 6.1 million, accounting for 16% of the national population and making up North America’s fifth-largest urban area. Its population is expected to increase to 9.1 million by 2036. The GTA consists of a land area of 7,000 sq. km/2,700 sq. miles and encompasses the City of Toronto and 25 other municipalities as well as 4 regions that have a high degree of integration with the City of Toronto as measured by commuting flows. This report contains more information on the market as well as opportunities for U.S. exporters.

Costa Rica: Sugar Annual

Costa Rica’s sugar cane production is forecast to decline by 4.3 percent in 2015/2016. This is the second consecutive year of lower production after the record harvest obtained in 2013/2014. Sugar production is expected to reach 445,000 MT in 2015/2016 as compared to 465,000 MT in 2014/2015. Production was negatively affected by drought conditions last year in the main production area of Guanacaste, coupled with excessive rainfall in other production areas of the country.

Kazakhstan: Grain and Feed Annual

FAS/Astana forecasts Kazakhstan wheat production in 2016 at 13.0 MMT, down slightly from 2015 production of 13.7 MMT, as wheat sown area is expected to fall, reducing harvested area. Kazakh wheat exports are forecast to remain flat in MY 2016/2017 at 6.5 MMT. FAS/Astana forecasts Kazakhstan barley production in 2016 at 2.8 MMT, only slightly higher than in 2015 (2.6 MMT).

Peru: Sugar Annual

Sugar production in Peru is forecast at 1.5 MMT in MY 2016, an increase of 13 percent compared to the previous year. Investments in new lands and mill improvements will stimulate Peruvian sugar production in the upcoming years, possibly leading to self-sufficiency within the next three years.

Russia: Grain and Feed Annual

Assuming average weather conditions during the growing season, FAS/Moscow forecasts Russia’s 2016 grain and pulses production at 101 million metric tons (MMT), a 2 percent decrease from the crop in 2015 but still higher than the previous five-year average of 93 MMT. Overall the MY 2016/17 forecast, by crop, is: wheat - 58 MMT (3 MMT lower than last year but still higher than the 5-years average of 53 MMT); barley - 18 MMT (1 MMT more than in 2015); corn - 12.5 MMT (0.7 MMT less than in 2015); rye - 2.5 MMT; oats - 4.8 MMT; milled rice - 0.73 MMT (1.12 MMT in rough weight); and approximately 4 MMT of other grains and pulses. Grain exports for MY 2016/17 are forecast at 30 MMT, just 1.6 MMT less than the 2015/16 estimated exports of 31.6 MMT’s.
