Child finds live ammunition at North Elementary School

| April 24, 2016 6:00 AM

No weapon found and nobody hurt

MOSES LAKE — An afternoon of parent-teacher conferences at North Elementary turned up something unexpected – live ammunition in a classroom.

District superintendent Michelle Price said conferences were underway when the discovery was made about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. A child who was accompanying parents found the ammunition and told the parents and teacher. No weapon was found. School was not in session, so no other children were in the classroom.

Price said it appears the ammo accidentally was dropped by someone while conferences were underway. But the classroom was busy with conferences, adults going in and out, she said, and it was impossible to determine when the ammunition might have been dropped, or by whom.

School officials called the sheriff’s office to find out what to do with it, and were advised to destroy it. The family member of an administrator took custody of it and destroyed it, Price said.
