Sales tax increase will raise $48,000 for streets

MATTAWA – The City of Mattawa will ask the voters of the newly-formed Transportation Benefit District to bump the city sales tax by two-tenths of a percent.

The call for this tax increase came at the first meeting of the The board on Sept. 3. Board member Betty Webster made the motion. Maggie Celaya seconded. And the Council approved unanimously.

The tax increase is not a done deal. Voters will have a chance to adopt or turn it down in the April elections.

If the voters pass the measure, it will raise $4,000 a month, or $48,000 a year, which will be dedicated entirely to streets.

In other business, TBD board members elected Brian Berghout as chairman of the group.
