Modern firearm deer hunters are getting excited about the upcoming deer season, which is scheduled to open one month from yesterday, Saturday, Oct. 17.

Archery and muzzleloader seasons are opening and closing in various game management units around the state. Bear season is open and so is the cougar season.

The dove season continues through Oct. 30, a month longer than in past years, plus the limit is 15 a day instead of 10. Remember the Eurasian collared doves do not count as a part of the regular dove limit.

The collared doves are about the size of a pigeon and have a black collar or line around the back of their neck. So a hunter could shoot 15 mourning doves and 30 collared doves if they could find them.

The general fishing season ends on Sept. 30. Haven’t received any current fishing reports, but with the cooler weather, the fishing should pickup to the good to great level.

The forest grouse season is open, so anglers/hunters could combine a camping/hunting/fishing trip.

Whatever your pleasure this time of year… have fun, but be careful out there.
