Wahluke, Royal in tie for soccer playoffs
SOUTH COUNTY — Today is the last day of the South Central A Conference East soccer season, and the Royal and Wahluke girls are tied for third place and the final berth in the upcoming playoffs.
And there is a problem. They don’t play each other today.
The two 3-6 teams can’t decide third place between them. If one team wins and the other loses the finales, the winning team will take third place.
But victory is not expected for either team. Royal travels to Warden, and Warden is very good. Wahluke will host Connell, and the Eagles are the league leaders.
If both rivals lose today, Wahluke gets third place on points. If they both win in regulation, Wahluke takes third.
There is a way for Royal to take third place if both win, but it’s complicated. Then there is the Granger factor.
The Spartans are 2-7. They have a good chance of beating Kiona-Benton at Granger to climb to 3-7 and a tie with Royal and Wahluke. In that case, because of the tie-breakers, Granger would finish third.
“Granger can jump ahead of us,” Wahluke coach Arthur DeVictoria said.
Royal and Wahluke got into this predicament when Wahluke surprised Kiona-Benton on Thursday, 3-2, in a shootout. Royal had created a one game gap over Wahluke the previous week when it surprised Ki-Be.
Wahluke and Royal both lost on Tuesday of last week. The Warriors fell to Warden, 4-3, and Royal lost to Granger, 2-1. Royal lost again on Thursday, 7-1, to Connell, and Wahluke closed the one game gap with the 3-2 win over Kiona-Benton.
