Coach Miller seeking input on Japanese wrestlers

ROYAL CITY — There will be a cultural exchange wrestling team in Royal City in January, and Royal coach Randy Miller wants to share the fun and excitement that event will surely provide.

Miller is inviting everyone in the area to a meeting on Nov. 3 at which details of the exchange and the needs of the visiting wrestlers will be discussed.

Miller and his son Darrin Miller, were part of an exchange team from Washington that went to Japan last summer. The still remember that experience fondly.

Both Millers said the more valuable part of that trip was the cultural exchange, not the wrestling. They will never forget how well they were treated.

Now it’s time for Royal City residents to do the same for visiting Japanese high school wrestlers. If you’d like to help, Randy asks you to attend the Nov. 3 meeting.

The meeting will be held in room 12 at the high school. It will kick off at 6 p.m.

“I’m looking for insight in things like; local attractions, housing, transportation, and Japanese interpreters,” Miller said.

“This event is a great chance to learn about the Japanese culture and to expose the Japanese team to ours,” he added.

The current time line (it could change) had the Japanese team arriving at the Spokane Airport on Jan. 4. They will move on to a hotel in Moses Lake that same day.

On Jan. 5, the Japanese wrestlers will go on local sight-seeing and practice with the Royal High team. On Jan. 6, there will be an assembly at Royal High at the end of the school day to welcome the wrestlers.

That same day there will be 6 p.m. wrestling dual: Columbia Basin All-Star team vs. Japan.

On Jan. 7 the Japanese team will accompany the Royal High team to the Gut Check Tournament in Bremerton.
