Volunteers needed for robotics meet hosted by Wahluke Junior High

MATTAWA — Wahluke Junior High School will kick off the technology competition season by hosting the Vex Nothing But Net tournament on Saturday, Oct. 17, and your help is sought.
This will be a VEX Robotics competition. This event will provide the students an opportunity to tune their robots, get in front of judges and see how some of the regional high schools have designed and constructed their projects for the challenge.
Nothing But Net relates to the robots that have been built this fall. They are made with the ability to throw a ball through netted triangle-shaped hoop.
“We can use your help,” STEM Department leader Arhur Morkin said. “Yes, you can assist in making the future of our students a little brighter by participating as a judge, referee, score keeper, or technical assistant.”
All roles are essential to making the event a success, and Morken’s staff will train you in the tasks required. If you are able to contribute four to eight hours, they will connect you with a rewarding experience.
Students will set up the arenas the day before so when the doors open robots can be inspected, practice rounds can begin, and then, the qualifying matches may take place. Judges are required from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the head judge staying through the finals at or around 5 p.m. to present the awards.
Judges (three to four people) interview students from an informal script about their projects and then use a scoring guide to validate their decisions about the finalists.
Score Keepers (four people) and Referees (five people) are able to work shorter shifts but will be standing, counting, and reminding students of the basic rules. These shifts can be in four- or eight-hour segments with breaks as needed.
The Head Referee will assist volunteers in all matters pertaining to the game and scoring. Technical Assistants (two people) will work with the event partner to keep all the technology up and going.
