Allred expected Colville

ROYAL CITY — As Royal prepared for the SCAC cross-over game with Goldendale, Coach Wiley Allred looked at the WIAA’s football tournament bracket and set his eye on Colville, expecting to see the Indians in the second round.

He was correct. He watched them defeat Eatonville, 29-0, Saturday afternoon at Colville. The two teams will meet at 6 p.m. Friday at Gonzaga Prep Stadium in Spokane.

“They are real solid,” Allred said. “Good defense. Tough running game and special teams.”

Allred noted Colville runs an offense similar to Wahluke’s but is more versatile and has more formations. The Indians run the ball behind a big, strong offensive line.

Colville, 9-1, is on an 8-game winning streak. The Indians opened with a 28-0 loss to 2A Cheney. Then they beat 2A West Valley, 12-7, to start the streak.

The Indian defense has pitched four shutouts and allowed 9.1 points per game. The offense has averaged 33.3 points, scoring 58 against Riverside and 55 against Newport.

“It will be a four quarter game,” Allred said.

Potentially. But Royal is playing some pretty good football of its own.

The Knights are 11-0 with an average victory margin of 58-4, and their defense has recorded five shutouts and missed another by the two points of a safety gifted by the offense. Except for Connell, no opponent has scored in double figures.

You could say those wins have been against so-so competition. If so, Royal didn’t waste time taking care of business, winning all of the blowouts in the first half. Because of all the blowouts, the Knights are not worn out, and they have avoided serious injury.

In addition, no one knows if Colville’s competition was any tougher. Eatonville finished the season with five losses.

The Indians are real solid, as Allred said. So are the Knights, in every phase of the game.
