Danyelle notches tag on first elk hunt

The hills east of Ellensburg are steep, seemingly straight up and down, depending upon where a hunter is standing. Danyelle Cavadini knows the feeling of hiking these hills after her first elk hunt recently.

Not only was this her first elk hunt, but she was hunting with the graduation president given by her father, Dan. The true spike bull elk dropped with one shot from the .270 WSM at 389 yards.

Look closely at this photo: The road is at the bottom of the hill, where the darker color begins, at distance of almost 400 yards or the length of four football fields. The term true spike means there is no branch to either antler.

Danyelle, originally from Bridgeport, recently graduated from WSU and is currently working at Northwest Farm Credit Services in Moses Lake. Tell her “Hi” and “Welcome to Moses Lake” when you see her. Oh and tell her “Good shot.”

More hunts underway

Study the big game pamphlet for the continuing seasons. The late deer general season is ongoing through Nov. 19, as is the hunters over 65 and disabled hunters and youth hunters. Archery and muzzleloader deer seasons are about to begin again. Some late elk seasons are about to begin again also.

The black bear season is scheduled to end on Nov. 15. Duck and goose seasons continue, but no success rates are available.
