MATTAWA - The new tennis season at Wahluke High School has had a rough start. There have been not team victories or individual triumphs.

"A new year, a lot of new faces," coach Adrian Sandoval said.

There is also a new assistant coach, Joel Perez. He is in his first year of coaching Tennis.

There are some returning players. Most notable among them are Maricela Nevarez and Mariela Pineda, who played as a doubles team. They will played No. 1 and No. 2 singles so far this year.

Nevarez and Pineda had a great run at districts last year. They finished two matches away from making it to state.

"Hopefully this year they can make it all the way," Sandoval said.

The Warriors had their first matches at White Swan.

"It was very windy, so it was hard to see where all the players are," Sandoval said.

The best effort by girls came from Nevarez in No. 2 singles. She lost, but she battled to two tie-breakers 6-6 (5-7), 6-6 (5-7).

Francisco Espindola and Elliott Ahmann had the same result in boys doubles. The fell 6-6 (5-7), 6-6 (5-7).

Nevarez had the best outing against Othello last week, but she fell 5-7, 2-6. There were numerous 0-6 outcomes against Granger for Wahluke.
