ROYAL CITY - Royal High School's SCAC East record leveled at 1-1 on Saturday with a 1-0 home loss to Connell in a shootout.

The Eagles moved to the top of the league with a 2-0 record in what is shaping up to be an unpredictable season.

The Connell kickers were perfect in the shootout. Their goal keeper made one save and made sure an errant shot went wide of the goal.

Before the shootout, the two teams battled defensively to a 0-0 tie. Jose Vargas had seven saves for the Eagles. Jose Jimenez had nine for the Knights.

Royal took a total of 24 shots. Connell took 17. Jose Fraga took seven for the Eagles. Jose Medina took seven for the Knights.

Royal had seven corner kicks. Connell had seven. The Eagles were called for nine fouls, the Knights for seven.

"We had plenty of opportunities to put the result in our favor, but the Connell keeper made saves, and the Connell team did well to manage the clock to get to the shootout," coach Jens Jensen said.

Up next for Royal is a visit to Kiona-Benton today. Cascade will visit Royal for a non-league match on Thursday at 6 p.m.
