Urban Monroes coming to play at George

GEORGE - The bluegrass band Urban Monroes will perform at the George Community Hall this Saturday, March 14, as part of the George Coffeehouse Concert Series.

The admission charge will be $3. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The concert will start at 7 p.m. The Georgettes will serve refreshments.

Urban Monroes takes its band name from the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe.

In the late 1930s, Bill Monroe developed a style of music that drew upon his entire musical experience. Based in Kentucky, Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys established what came to be known as, you guessed it, bluegrass.

Although the same influences that molded the bluegrass sound would also give birth to both modern country and rock music, Monroe's style has been uniquely his own.

With a respectful nod to tradition plus a shot of adrenaline, Urban Monroes' contemporary bluegrass combines the traditional with the original to create an energetic and technically intricate combination of skills of some of the Pacific Northwest's finest talent.

As individuals, the Urban Monroes have earned bluegrass instrument championships, a National Endowment for the Arts award and songwriting accolades. They have been featured on the Emmy award-winning PBS series Art Beat, and their musical experiences have taken them around the world to some of bluegrass's biggest venues.
