EPHRATA - Grant County residents may learn how to compost yard and garden waste at a free class this Thursday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. at Grant County Public Works.

It will be held in the public meeting room, which is located at 124 Enterprise St. SE, Ephrata. The class will last approximately 60 minutes.

After attending the class, one participant from each household will receive a free, portable compost bin. Participants do not need to pre-register to attend.

According to Grant County Solid Waste's Joan Melvin, composting is a way of turning yard and garden waste into a beneficial resource. It helps plants grow healthier and faster by keeping the soil loose and well drained.

While compost is not a substitute for fertilizers, it does contain beneficial nutrients, and it keeps fertilizer nutrients near the root systems.

Composting may also save you money by reducing how much you throw away. And you can avoid unsightly piles of grass clippings.

The class is sponsored by Grant County Solid Waste and the Dept. of Ecology. For more information, contact Grant County Solid Waste at 754-6082.
