Fresh news from MarDon Resort

| June 12, 2015 1:45 PM

The water level on Potholes Reservoir has started dropping really quickly.

With high water lasting into the beginning of June, most fish have completed a fine spring spawn.

Fishers are reporting some much-improved yellow perch catches trolling spinners and crawlers.

Some of these spawned-out yellow perch are over 12 inches in length. Walleye have picked up this past week with some southwest winds over 10 miles per hour.

This created the classic walleye chop. The mouth of Crab Creek has been producing walleye limits trolling along weed-lines in five to 11 feet of water.

One angler reported that he released five walleye over 25 inches trolling in this same area.

These pockets of quality walleye are being targeted all over the sand dunes but at this time the Crab Creek channel has been the most productive.

Bass fishing continues to be amazing using top water lures, spinner-baits, senkos and many different plastic lures.

During this period of unusually warm weather in our area trollers are catching rainbow trout up to 24 inches using Needlefish, Rapala Shad-Raps and spinners and crawlers.

They are fishing in 20 to 35 feet of water to target these beauties. We are also seeing a new and improved crappie fishery at the MarDon Dock.

This past week we have seen crappie up to 14 inches and many dock fishing regulars are only keeping crappie over 10 inches.

This fishery will be amazing once the water drops another 5 feet, leaving the crappie spawning areas high and dry. This will force crappie to school all over Potholes Reservoir.

This Saturday and Sunday we are excited to host the 2nd Annual Limit-Out Marine Big Bass Tournament. This tournament will be June 13 and 14.

This is a fun tournament open to the public and they do an hourly weigh in/pay out system.

If you are in this tournament be sure to be off the water at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 12. Check in is at MarDon Resort at 4 p.m. on Friday. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the CWFAC Fish Habitat Program on Potholes Reservoir.
