Royal boys 2nd, girls 3rd at district track
ROYAL CITY - Royal High track and field coach Scott Sandberg started the recently-completed season believing it would be a good year for his boys and girls.
It was a very good year. The boys finished second at the SCAC District meet on May 22, and the girls finished third.
The Royal Register was unable to report the results last week because of the Memorial Day holiday.
As usual, the boys were led by junior Joe Lang. Sophomore Maggie Delay and freshman Kay Lester led the girls.
Zillah won the boys competition with 140 points. Royal scored 74. For the girls, Zillah had 146 points. Royal had 86. The best news for Royal was that 16 athletes qualified for the state meet.
Lang won the triple jump and 110-meter hurdles and finished second in the long jump. His 400-meter relay team finished fourth.
Delay won the 100-meter hurdles, took second in the pole vault and fourth in the long jump. Her 800-meter relay did not make it to state, but it set a school record of 1:51.57 in fifth place finish.
Kay Lester finished third in the 800, 1600 and 3200 and ran on the second-place 1600-meter relay. Like Lang, she made it to state in four events.
