October 1, 1923 - July 23, 2015

On the morning of July 23, 2015, at the age of 91, Hazel Krider entered into eternal life to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Hazel was born on October 1, 1923, in Washington, DC, to James Carter Temple and Hermine Susanna Marie Litchfield. Her early years were spent in Portsmouth, R.I., with her parents and younger brother, Jim. She graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, R.I. in 1941. She was gifted in the area of art, which was a passion that was a focal point throughout her entire life. Following her high school graduation, she enrolled in drafting school where she applied her artistic talents. From there she used those newly acquired talents at her first job in a Torpedo station.

Following the death of her mother, the family moved out west in 1947 to be with other close family members. They settled in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where Hazel started college soon after at North Idaho College. It was there that she earned her Associate of Arts degree, and met the love of her life, Kenyon.

Hazel and Kenyon were married on August 16, 1949, at the First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d'Alene. They made their first home in Coeur d'Alene, and on August 1, 1951, they welcomed daughter Susan into their lives.

1951 brought about another change when the family moved to Meridian, Idaho. Hazel's father had purchased a drive-in movie theater. It was here that the family worked together. Ken also joined the Boise police force, and a move to Boise from Meridian soon followed.

In 1962, Ken left the police force and joined the Coast Guard during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the family moved to Seattle closer to his family. Hazel continued on as a dedicated house wife. She was an excellent cook and a talented seamstress. It was here in Seattle that she pushed to continue her gift of art. She took extensive training in the area of Sumi painting, which is the traditional form of Chinese art. Her career extended for many years, and as she improved her techniques, she was invited to exhibit at many art shows. The most prestigious was at the Frey Art Museum in Seattle. Her paintings were purchased by individuals across the United States and as far away as Japan.

In the mid 1970s, they moved to Kent, Wash. to be closer to Ken's work. Hazel continued to share her talents with others by offering classes at the YWCA in Seattle and eventually in her home studio in Kent.

Hazel and Ken made one final move in 2004 to Moses Lake, Wash., where they lived in a home on the lake until health issues set in.

Hazel loved her family, and friends. She loved to travel, loved nature and animals. She enjoyed rock collecting. Both Hazel and Ken enjoyed their travels to many dog shows in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. Ken was the announcer, and she sold catalogs to exhibitors. They made many wonderful friends along the way. Most of all she loved her husband of almost sixty-six years with all of her heart.

She is survived by her husband, Kenyon, daughter Susan Ellestad, and her husband Larry, of Moses Lake; her brother Jim Temple, and his wife Norene, from Boise, Idaho; nephew Dan Temple, and his wife Caroline, of Covington, Wash.; and niece Diane Martin, and her husband Mel of Boise, Idaho and niece Sigrid Soini of Shoreline, Wash., as well as many great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two infant sons.

Our deepest gratitude goes out to Penny and Ed Weber of Lakeview Home Care and their entire staff for the excellent care and compassion they have given Hazel, and to Dr. Cole Hemmerling for his care and kindness over the past few years.
