Final Royal students of month named
ROYAL CITY - Senior Guillermo Navarro, Junior Elsie Delgado, sophomore Maggie Delay and freshman Kay Lester were named Royal High School students of the month for May, the final selection of the year.
The latter three were members of the track and field team that recently completed a highly successful season with league and sub-district titles.
The SOM of the month are selected by the teachers from a list of nominees presented by Counselor Mark Kondo. The nominations are based on a series of character traits, including citizenship and academics.
Guillermo is the son of Jesus Lozoya. He was happy to be a Royal student and didn't have a favorite class.
"I like them all," he said.
Guillermo doesn't watch much TV but, when he does, he usually turns on Breaking Bad. He does have a favorite food - tacos - and favorite song, "El Quesito."
Guillermo's inspiration is his step-father, "a hard-working man who has overcome an abundant amount of obstacles and still has a smile on his face."
Elsie's parents are Griselda Torres and Eugenio Delgado. Her favorite movie is Pitch Perfect, and she doesn't have a television.
Elsie likes Spanish class over all others, enjoys Chicken Terriyaki and loves to play soccer.
"Nothing is impossible," she says. "The word itself says I'm possible."
Maggie is the daughter of Kim and JoAnn Delay. She likes the movie Stick It, the TV show Elementary and English class. And she enjoys eating PiƱas.
A leading athlete at Royal High, Maggie claims gymnastics and track as her favorite activities.
"Storms don't last forever," she says. "Choose to be happy."
Brad and Diana Lester are Kay's parents. A long distance runner who went to state in three events, Kay's favorite activity is running.
"You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great," she says.
Kay is inspired by her parents because they push her to do her very best in everything.
Kay likes The Hunger Games movie, The Walking Dead TV show, science class and chicken alfredo.
"Work hard, be awesome," she says.
