Police looking for man who shot at officer

ROYAL CITY - A man who shot at a Royal City Police officer at least once on Tuesday, June 30, is being sought by law enforcement officers. He is identified as David Santos Sotello.

According to Grant County Sheriff Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman, Santos Sotello had not yet been located as of 9 a.m. on Monday, July 6.

According to Royal City Police Chief Darren Smith, one shot was fired at his officer. According to witnesses, there were at least two other shots fired.

The incident began to take shape on June 30 at approximately 7:30 p.m. A Royal City Police Officer responded to the 400 block of Cherry St NE, in Royal City, on a report of a subject - David Santos Sotello - violating a court order.

The Officer located Santos Sotello and attempted to make contact. Santos Sotello fled in a blue 2000 Dodge Durango, and a chase ensued.

During the chase, the officer said, Santos Sotello pointed a rifle out the driver's window and fired at least one round from the rifle toward him near the intersection of Poplar St. NE and Apple Ave. NE in Royal City. The officer requested assistance and followed Santos Sotello from a distance.

Individuals who witnessed the pursuit reported hearing two additional shots fired from the fleeing vehicle near the intersection of Roads 12 SW and E SW. The officer lost sight of the vehicle near 10SW and E SW.

The Royal City Police Department was assisted in searching for Santos Sotello by the Grant County Sheriff's Department and the Washington State Patrol, but he still hadn't been found as of yesterday morning.

"We're still looking for him right now," Smith said at 2 p.m. on July 2.

Smith added that police had no idea where Santos Sotello may have gone.

Santos Sotello is described as a Hispanic male, 35, with black hair and brown eyes. He is 5-10 and 215 pounds. Smith said he may also go by the name Antonio Onofre.

The vehicle Santos Sotello was in is described as a blue 2000 Dodge Durango bearing Washington license AUY5187.
