Kids learn about building schools

ROYAL CITY - History does repeat itself, as far as Red Rock Elementary second grade teacher Candy Vermeer is concerned.

Repeating her actions of more than 20 years ago, Mrs. Vermeer used the construction of a new school, Royal Intermediate, as a learning tool this spring. She even had Construction Manager Mike Curry visit the classroom and speak to the children about the process.

The children got to see how some of the things they learn in school are applied to the building of a school. What they really wanted to know about was the big hole dug near the building.

"They were disappointed to hear that there was no big swimming pool," Royal School District Business Manager David Andra said.

The big hole the students saw in the ground was simply for the drainage system.

The class spent the entire year peering through the fence and writing about the changes they saw occurring just beyond their playground.

Mrs. Vermeer remembers weekly field trips with her students more than 20 years ago when Red Rock Elementary was built. She wanted to provide her current students with a similar experience to learn about the school they will attend in just two years.
