ROYAL CITY - In this special year for the Royal City SummerFest there will be a special golf tournament that real golfers ought to try at least once in their lifetime.

It's a glowball tournament to be held at the Royal Golf Course this Saturday with a 9 p.m. shotgun start. There will be no lighting except for the glowballs and glowsticks.

According to Golf Course Superintendent Shawn Vetterick, the fairways and tees will be marked with glowsticks. Each player will be wearing a glow necklace. The flagsticks will have LED lights instead of flags, and the holes will have a light within, shining upward.

"It promises to be a lot of fun," Vetterick said.

In the past, the tourney associated with SummerFest was held the Saturday before the festival. This one was moved to the Saturday of the festival due to the fact most visitors will be on hand that day and night.

Players will be allowed to walk, but Vetterick hopes all will want to ride. There are 12 carts available, and their rental supports the golf course. Players should secure them early.

"If we have more players than we have carts for, I think we'll be able to rent some member carts." Vetterick said.

The carts don't have lights, but each cart will carry a fashlight. That will help players avoid hitting into each other.

The tournament will be a four-person scramble. It will go only nine holes. The entry fee will be $120 per team. That will cover the green fees that go to support of the golf course, prizes and the cost of equipping the course for a glowball tournament.

Vetterick said the tournament will take up to 18 teams.

The tournament will be preceded by a potluck dinner at 7:30 p.m. at the clubhouse. The SummerFest will provide the dinnerware and water. All that diners need to do is bring the meals.

The evening will include acoustical guitar entertainment by the popular duo of Slag Callahan of Royal City and Gavin Rose of Moses Lake. They will play at the potluck and through the evening.

Callahan noted some Royal High classes have scheduled reunions for Sunday and others have not scheduled anything. He invites them to the golf course for the potluck and some guitar music.
