50 years of class this weekend
ROYAL CITY - The Royal City SummerFest Committee is expecting the grandest SummerFest of all this weekend, Jul 10-11. The theme will be: ROYAL REUNION: 50 YEARS OF CLASS.
To preside over this SummerFest, the committee has chosen the first and long-time principal of Royal High School Ken Kallenberger.
ROYAL REUNION: 50 YEARS OF CLASS has been in the works for five years. It recognizes the 50-year anniversary of Royal High School's first graduating class. But the committee decided to honor all 50 years of classes with an all-school reunion.
SummerFest will be a 3-day celebration, as always. But Friday, July 10, will be quite different from past Fridays. The annual barbecue will be held on the school grounds, followed by several new activities.
"We will have bleachers and chairs," committee member Leslie Fanning said. "But we encourage people to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets. We may not have chairs for everyone."
Fanning added that numerous people who were students or employees or students and employees at Royal High have announced they will be at SummerFest.
Everything will start with the Royal Reunion registration and a meet and greet at the Royal Middle School gymnasium from 4-6 p.m.
There will be a "Thank You For Helping Us Grow" display to honor teachers, bus drivers, classified stuff, instructional assistants, staff in general who have worked at Royal High through the years.
Registrations will be taken for the first ever Royal Courts 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Royal High volleyball coach Paul Olsufka will be in charge.
At 5 p.m., Dale Roth Productions will start up the music for a sock hop - 50 Years of the Hit Parade - outdoors on the pavement.
The barbecue will be served from the cafeteria from 6-8 p.m. It will be prepared and served by Saddle Mountain Supply. There will be indoor and outdoor dining.
The Royal High pep band, under the direction of Eric Mietenkort, will perform at 6 p.m.
At 6:25 p.m., Riley Christensen will emcee Royal's Got Talent, the annual community talent show. Ten to 12 acts are scheduled.
At 7:30 p.m. Dale Roth Productions will launch the "Name That Tune" show. This will be an audience participation event. Prizes will be awarded. Local businesses have donated 35 so far.
The Name that Tune competition will be between boys and girls by decades. The teams will hear music from their own decades.
At 8 p.m., Dale Roth Productions will stage a Limbo contest. There will be a light show as dark approaches and dancing and visiting until about 10 p.m.
At that time, Royal City will see the biggest fireworks show ever in a recently planted field west of the school. It will be visible from the school grounds.
"There are no dry fields in that area," Fanning said. "It will be very safe."
Saturday will be the same as ever, with all events at Lions Park. It will start with the free cowboy breakfast served by the Royal Education Association and the Run Royal registration at 6 a.m.
Kids, there will be, as usual, a $3 all day (11 a.m.-5 p.m.) armband for the inflatable toys. They will include Rat Race/Zorb Balls, Jacob's Ladder, Human Gyroscope, Gladiator Joust, 6-Foot Wavy Waterslide and Funhouse Castle.
School buses will take visitors on tours of the schools from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday.
The entire weekend schedule is printed elsewhere in this issue of The Royal Register.
