MATTAWA - "Flowers", by Wahluke Junior High student Alejandra Ramos will be the Makeover Mattawa community mural, set to be painted on a wall at Estudillos grocery store.

According to WJH Assistant Principal Sean Langdon, an unveiling is planned for the end of March. It will be painted by members of the WJH Mural Club, which is also a class at the school.

Murals are the club's contribution to Makeover Mattawa, a community beautification project launched mostly by the schools last year.

The club submitted five paintings to the mural committee to be considered for the project. The committee selected two for a runoff vote of the community. The second was painted by Javier Rosales.

"The committee and the community appreciated the efforts of both artists," Langdon said. "Congratulations to both Alejandra and Javier."

The winner was determined by votes from the community at Estudillos and votes on social media. The murals reached more than 400 people in the community on Facebook and Twitter.

"Now Alejandra and Bridget Mitchell's mural class can begin work on the big (mural) project," Langdon said.

Langdon thanked Mitchell for her efforts with the class and the club. He noted the interior of the school is dotted with works of art and said the public is invited to view them.

"Bridget and the mural class continue to inspire the community," he said. "I can't wait to see the new mural."

"And if you ever get the chance," Langdon added, "visit Wahluke Junior High to see all of her class's beautiful murals and artwork throughout the school."
