MOSES LAKE - The Washington State Potato Commission was elated last week to learn that the Institute of Medicine recommends that fresh white potatoes be included in the USDA Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

To date, white potatoes had been the only vegetable or fruit excluded from the WIC voucher program. The inclusion of white potatoes is consistent with the most current recommendations within the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA).

"It is refreshing to see a scientific body like the IOM in agreement regarding the health benefits that a wholesome fresh potato can provide to participants of the WIC program," WSPC Executive Director Chris Voigt said. "Our partners in Congress have been speaking about the health benefits of fresh potatoes for years, urging USDA to utilize current nutritional information and accept fresh potatoes in the WIC program.

"This week's announcement validates what we already know, a medium white potato is an excellent source of potassium and dietary fiber amongst numerous other health benefits."

The WSPC thanks the Washington state congressional delegation for continued support for this critical change that should positively affect Basin potato growers.

Fresh potatoes were added to the WIC program this January.
