Migratory ducks and geese continue to show a heavy presence in the Potholes Recreational Area, through-out the Royal Slope, the Columbia Basin National Wildlife Refuge and Moses Lake. The Sandhill Cranes are frequenting fields just west of MarDon Resort. This past week the Sandhill Cranes have been using a field at the intersection of Hwy 262 S.E. and Frenchman Hills Road.

For the past several years Presidents Day Weekend has been the beginning of the time to catch limits of pre-spawn aggressive male walleye. In previous years 90% of the walleye caught during late January, February and March have been 22 inches or smaller. Serious anglers during this Blade Bait time can catch and release 30 to 50 walleye per boat. The best area on the reservoir to target these fish would be the mouth of Crab Creek where it enters the main pool of Potholes Reservoir. This fishery is building as our water temperatures warm. The Lind Coulee arm of Potholes Reservoir has been tough but as our water level rises in the Lind Coulee and the water warms the bite will only get better.
